ExpressVPN and NordVPN have been the two heavyweights of the VPN world for years. Both are fast, both are secure, and both cost more than the competition. But they’re not the same — and which one you pick depends on what you actually need.
This comparison covers speed, privacy, streaming, gaming, and value to help you decide.
Quick verdict

Speed comparison
Both VPNs are fast.
| Metric | NordVPN (NordLynx) | ExpressVPN (Lightway) |

Privacy and jurisdiction
This is where ExpressVPN has a genuine edge. ExpressVPN is based in the British Virgin Islands — outside the 5/9/14 Eyes alliance. It has no logs (verified by PwC audits) and has never been compelled to hand over user data. Its TrustedServer technology runs entirely on RAM, so no data is written to disk.
NordVPN is based in Panama (also privacy-friendly), has passed multiple independent audits, and runs its own RAM-only servers. Both are trustworthy. If you’re choosing on privacy alone, ExpressVPN has a slight edge.
| Factor | NordVPN | ExpressVPN |

| Jurisdiction | Panama | British Virgin Islands |
| No-logs audit | ✅ (multiple) | ✅ (PwC) |
| RAM-only servers | ✅ | ✅ (TrustedServer) |

Verdict
NordVPN wins for most people. It’s cheaper, and has more features (Threat Protection, Meshnet).
ExpressVPN wins if privacy is your absolute priority and you value the BVI jurisdiction + PwC audits. It’s the gold standard for privacy, and you pay a premium for it.
