The best free password manager in 2026 is not the one with the longest feature list. Almost every vendor writes “unlimited passwords, unlimited devices” on its free tier — and only two mean it literally. The difference hides in one line of fine print: how many devices can be logged in at the same time.
That line decides whether a free plan lasts a week or three years. We read the vendors’ own pricing pages and support documents in September 2026 and matched them against what actually blocks you in daily use. Four free tiers survive the test.

How we picked
Three tests, in this order:
- What stops working at zero cost. A permanent free tier is a product; a 14-day trial is a sales tactic.
- The device rule. How many devices stay logged in at once, and what happens when you open the laptop after using the phone.
- The exit. Can you export every entry in a standard format, or are you renting access to your own data?

What “free” actually means in 2026
Three lines of fine print decide everything.
Permanent free versus trial. Dashlane discontinued its Free plan on 16 September 2025 and now sells a 14-day Premium trial. 1Password has never had a free tier. On those two pages, “free” means “free until the calendar says otherwise”. Bitwarden, Proton Pass, NordPass and KeePassXC are permanent.
Simultaneous sessions. This is the real cut. NordPass Free stores unlimited passwords and syncs them across your devices, but you can only be active on one device at a time — open it on the laptop and you must log out of the phone first. Bitwarden and Proton Pass carry no such rule. That single sentence is why the three multi-device free tiers are not interchangeable.
What lives inside the vault. On every free plan, two-factor codes (TOTP) and breach monitoring are paid features, and so is secure sharing. In practice your passwords sit in one app and your 2FA codes in another. Free is fine; it just is not complete.
Bitwarden Free — best free overall
Bitwarden gives away more than most vendors sell. On the free plan: unlimited passwords, notes, credit cards and identities, unlimited devices with no simultaneous-session limit, passkeys, a password generator, encrypted export, browser, mobile and desktop apps, and free vault sharing with one other Bitwarden user.
What you do not get: the built-in TOTP authenticator, emergency access, vault health reports beyond the basic breach check, and encrypted file attachments. All of that sits in Premium.
The honest con: the interface is plainer than 1Password’s and the settings read like an admin console. That plainness is the price of being open source, independently audited and self-hostable — and it is why security teams keep recommending it.
Who it is for: almost everyone. If you want one free vault that behaves identically on a work Windows laptop, an iPhone and three browsers, stop here.
The upgrade, if you ever take it: Premium is $1.65/month billed annually at $19.80/year, after a January 2026 increase that also raised encrypted storage to 5 GB. Families is $47.88/year for six people. Bitwarden has no affiliate programme we are part of, so there is no link in this section — and no effect on the ranking.
Proton Pass Free — best free tier with email aliases
Proton Pass Free is the only free tier here that includes something you would otherwise pay for: 10 hide-my-email aliases. You sign up for a service with a throwaway address that forwards to your real inbox, and when that service leaks or sells your data, you switch the alias off. Nothing else at $0 does this.
You also get unlimited logins, secure notes and cards, unlimited devices, passkeys, weak-password alerts and a generator, from a Swiss, open-source, audited provider.
Not included: the integrated 2FA authenticator (Pass Plus only), dark web monitoring, secure vault sharing, file attachments and your own alias domain. So the codes stay in a second app.
The honest con is that the aliases are also the hook. Once forty logins sit behind them, keeping the workflow tidy means Pass Plus at $2.99/month on the 12-month plan ($35.88 billed). If you already pay for Proton Unlimited, Pass Plus is included.
Who it is for: people who sign up for a lot of services and are tired of handing out their real email address.
NordPass Free — best free tier to grow out of
NordPass Free is permanent and does the basics properly: unlimited password storage, autosave, autofill, cross-device sync, xChaCha20 encryption, secure notes and cards, and MFA on the account itself.
Then comes the limit that defines the tier: one active session at a time. There is no Password Health, no Data Breach Scanner, no email masking and no file attachments either. On day one it feels fine. On day two, when you reach for the laptop, it does not.
So why is it on this list? Because the path out is short and cheap, and nothing you saved is locked. Premium removes the session limit and adds the security tools for $1.89/month billed yearly ($23.88), or $1.59/month on a two-year term; Family covers six accounts. Check NordPass plans.

Who it is for: anyone who intends to end up on a paid plan and likes the Nord ecosystem. As a pure free product it is the weakest of the three multi-device options. If free-forever is the goal, take Bitwarden.
KeePassXC — best free if you want no cloud at all
KeePassXC stores your vault in a single encrypted .kdbx file on your own disk. No account, no server, no subscription, no vendor — free forever, open source, actively maintained. You can require a key file on a USB stick plus a hardware key, and the file never leaves your machine unless you move it.
The cons are real. You own the sync, so the file lives in Nextcloud, Dropbox or a synced folder and you accept the risk of an unresolved conflict. Mobile means a separate app (KeePassDX on Android, Strongbox on iOS), and autofill is not as smooth as Bitwarden’s or Proton’s.
Who it is for: the person who already self-hosts something, or who does not want any vendor holding the vault. For everyone else it is more maintenance than a password manager should cost.
What we skipped, and why
Keeper Free. One mobile device, 10 records, no browser extension, no web vault, no sync. The real product starts at $3.33/month billed annually ($39.96/year).
Dashlane. The free plan ended on 16 September 2025. In 2026 you get a 14-day Premium trial, then Premium at $4.99/month or Friends & Family at $7.49/month, billed annually. Good products, genuinely not free, therefore out of scope for this page.
1Password. No free plan, ever. A 14-day trial, then Individual at $2.99/month on the current promotional rate ($3.99 regular) or Families at $4.49/month promotional, billed annually. Check current 1Password pricing if you want the full product — just not the free one.

How to choose
- You want free, and you want it to stay free. Bitwarden Free — nothing else here combines unlimited simultaneous devices with a permanent free tier.
- You hand out your email address constantly. Proton Pass Free, and use the 10 aliases from day one.
- You already pay for NordVPN. Start on NordPass Free and upgrade when the one-session rule starts costing you time (NordPass plans); for a team, NordPass Business handles the admin side.
- You never want a vendor in the middle. KeePassXC, and pick your own sync.
- You are on one platform only, under about 20 logins. The browser built-in is enough — keep an export file anyway.

What happened to the Dashlane free plan?
Dashlane discontinued it on 16 September 2025. Existing free users were moved to a Premium trial and asked to subscribe. In 2026 Dashlane starts at $4.99/month.
Is it safe to trust a free password manager?
The cipher is the least of your problems — you are the risk. Lose the master password and the recovery code and nobody can restore the vault, free or paid. Write the recovery material down, store it offline, and export your vault once a year so you are never locked in.
