NordVPN Threat Protection Review 2026: Is It a Real Antivirus?

Verdict first: NordVPN’s Threat Protection β€” the feature Nord now markets as its “next-gen antivirus” β€” is a real threat blocker, not a traditional antivirus. Buy NordVPN Complete at $4.49/month (2-year plan) if you want malware-download scanning, phishing and scam blocking, and an ad blocker in the app you already use for your VPN. Stay on Basic $3.49/month if DNS-level phishing blocking is all you need. Do not cancel a proper antivirus for it if you open attachments or install software regularly: NordVPN’s engine stops threats online, it does not scan your whole disk or clean up an infected PC.

Prices checked: 13 October 2026, read from nordvpn.com/pricing and nordvpn.com/next-gen-antivirus on that date. Renewal figures are NordVPN’s own published renewals; the first term is a promotion, not the price you keep.

Quick verdict (TL;DR)

  • πŸ† Best for most people: NordVPN Complete β€” $4.49/mo on the 2-year plan, renewing at $219.48/year. The cheapest sensible way to add download scanning plus an ad blocker to a VPN subscription.
  • πŸ’° Best if you only want the blocker: NordVPN Basic β€” $3.49/mo, renewing at $139.08/year. It already includes DNS-based scam and phishing protection, just not the file scanner.
  • 🧱 Keep a real antivirus as well: Microsoft Defender ($0, already on Windows 11) is enough for full scans; Bitdefender if you want a paid suite with remediation and support.
  • πŸ‘€ Want identity monitoring in the same bill: NordVPN Prime β€” $7.49/mo, renewing at $296.28/year. Add email, phone, credit-card and national-ID monitoring, password manager and 1 TB of cloud storage.
  • 🚫 Skip it entirely if you don’t want a VPN subscription β€” there is no standalone Threat Protection product.

NordVPN Threat Protection cost per year chart: Basic at 41.88 US dollars in the first year renewing at 139.08, Complete at 53.88 renewing at 219.48, Prime at 89.88 renewing at 296.28, against free Microsoft Defender, prices checked 13 October 2026

How we judged this feature

We judged it on the four things that decide whether it replaces a line item in your budget: what it blocks, what it provably does not block, which plan you need for each part, and what it costs in year two. Two rules kept it honest: every price was read from NordVPN’s own pricing page on 13 October 2026, and a capability only counts if NordVPN lists it for that plan. We did not run our own malware test, so nothing below claims a detection score we did not measure ourselves.

What Threat Protection actually is in 2026

If you searched for “Threat Protection” you may be looking at a feature that no longer carries that name. NordVPN absorbed Threat Protection Pro into a broader package it calls its next-gen antivirus, and inside the app it now appears as “Scam, phishing, and malware protection.” The old name survives in older reviews and in a few support pages. The engine itself is Nord’s own: the company states it uses no third-party antivirus SDKs.

Two separate layers are sold under one name, and that is the single most important thing to understand before you pay.

Layer 1 β€” DNS-based threat blocking (every plan)

Traffic for your whole device is filtered through NordVPN’s DNS servers, which refuse to resolve malicious and phishing domains and strip out a large share of ads and trackers. NordVPN lists this as included on all three plans, including Basic. The catch is in the same table: it only works while you are connected to a VPN server.

Layer 2 β€” the next-gen antivirus, formerly Threat Protection Pro (Complete and Prime)

This is the part that justifies the word “antivirus”: files are scanned as they download and dangerous ones are deleted before they run, your installed apps are checked for security weaknesses, and you get the ad and tracker blocker, unlimited email link scanning (Gmail and Yahoo), call protection, Android message protection and an alert if a session has been hijacked. NordVPN’s comparison page is explicit that this runs on the desktop app only.

The feature list NordVPN publishes for this layer is worth reading line by line, because it tells you what kind of product this is: malicious website blocker, phishing website blocker, ad blocker, tracker blocker, malware scanner, scam and fraud alert, anti-phishing protection, email protection, a crypto wallet address checker, a hijacked-session alert, and a URL cleaner. Eight of those eleven decide whether a link, page or download is safe. Only the malware scanner touches files, and it watches them arrive.

What it looks like in practice

The behaviour is closer to a browser bodyguard than to a security suite with a dashboard you visit. NordVPN says the protection runs silently in the background for as long as the app is open, and throws a warning at the moment of risk: a fake parcel-delivery link is flagged before the page loads, a too-cheap storefront is called out before you type card details, a download is deleted as it completes. Email protection reads the links inside an open message rather than the mailbox as a whole, and email monitoring is limited to Gmail and Yahoo accounts.

Two practical details NordVPN documents matter more than the marketing: false positives happen, and you can override them. When a legitimate site is wrongly flagged you get a scam warning with an Unblock button, and specific sites can be allowlisted permanently in the app’s settings. The same allowlist is the fix when aggressive ad and tracker blocking breaks a page’s layout β€” a real annoyance on some news and login pages.

What each plan actually includes

Capability Basic Complete Prime
Secure VPN, 10 devices at once Included Included Included
DNS-based scam & phishing protection Included Included Included
Download scanning + app weakness check (desktop only) Not included Included Included
Ad and tracker blocker (desktop only) Not included Included Included
Email protection, Gmail/Yahoo (desktop only) Not included Included Included
Call protection / message protection (Android only) Not included Included Included
Password manager + 1 TB cloud storage Not included Included Included
Email, phone, card and national-ID monitoring Not included Not included Included

Read that table before buying: the scanner people call “Threat Protection Pro” sits in the middle two tiers, while the DNS blocking is already on the cheapest plan.

What it does not do

This is the section most reviews skip, and it is the one that decides whether you keep your antivirus.

  • No full-disk scan, no quarantine of files already on your machine. NordVPN’s own words: a traditional antivirus “scans files, monitors processes, and quarantines known threats,” while its engine “deletes malicious downloads and blocks dangerous websites.” One protects locally, the other online. If malware is already on your PC, this is not the tool that removes it.
  • No on-device scanner on phones or tablets. The file scanning, app check, ad blocker and email protection are desktop features. On mobile you get the DNS layer, which needs the VPN on.
  • Message protection is Android-only for now β€” NordVPN’s table says iOS support is “coming soon,” so iPhone owners should not buy Prime for it.
  • The DNS layer needs a VPN connection. Disconnect and the blocking goes with it; the desktop antivirus layer keeps running without the VPN.
  • It is not sold alone. There is no way to buy Threat Protection without a NordVPN subscription, which makes the real comparison “Threat Protection plus a VPN I may not want” against “an antivirus on its own.”

The real prices, and the year-two problem

Plan 2-year promo First 27 months Renews at (per year)
Basic $3.49/mo $94.23 $139.08
Complete $4.49/mo $121.23 $219.48
Prime $7.49/mo $202.23 $296.28

The monthly number is a two-year, discounted rate, and all three renewals are noticeably higher β€” NordVPN lists them in the small print next to each ticker. Complete is the only tier where the next-gen antivirus makes financial sense as a two-for-one: the jump from Basic is one dollar a month, and it buys the download scanner, the ad blocker and the email scanning. Prime stacks identity monitoring on top for $7.49, which is worth it only if you would otherwise buy monitoring separately (our NordProtect review covers that decision on its own). A 30-day money-back guarantee applies to all of them.

One structuring note before you compare ticks: the VPN is the part you are actually buying, and the protection layer rides on it. Our NordVPN review covers the tunnel, the server network and the speed story; this page is about the security layer on top. For current plan options, NordVPN’s own pricing page is the only place that reflects today’s promotion.

How it compares with a dedicated antivirus

NordVPN lists four third-party validations on its own page: AV-Comparatives anti-phishing approval (2026 badge), AV-Test anti-malware (“approved threat protection network”), AV-Comparatives fake-shop detection, where Nord states the tool detected 80–90% of newly created fake shops, and West Coast Labs, which it says validated “prominent antivirus features” for malware detection and remediation. NordVPN adds a footnote that all four certificates were awarded to the feature formerly known as Threat Protection Pro.

That is a solid set of online-threat badges, and it is not the same as the main antivirus certifications a dedicated suite earns for scanning and removing malware from a device. A dedicated product such as Bitdefender or Norton 360 adds on-demand and scheduled scans, real-time file monitoring, quarantine and cleanup, gamer and ransomware modes, and phone support. For a user who lives in a browser, Threat Protection covers most of the realistic attack surface; for someone who installs cracks, mods and email attachments, it covers the delivery and misses the aftermath.

The honest framing is not “which is better” but “where does the attack land.” Our Bitdefender review and our breakdown of whether you still need antivirus in 2026 both land on the same answer: layers, not loyalty. NordVPN Complete plus Microsoft Defender is a legitimate two-part setup, and it is a cheaper one than most paid suites.

Who should NOT buy this

  1. You keep files on your PC and expect protection of what is already there. No scanning of existing files, no cleanup. Buy an antivirus.
  2. You are on iPhone or iPad and want an on-device scanner. You will get DNS-based blocking, not a scanner, and not the Android message protection either.
  3. You don’t want a VPN. Threat Protection cannot be unbundled, so this is a VPN decision first and a security decision second.
  4. You need to protect a business fleet. Device administration, policy and reporting live in NordLayer, not in this consumer app β€” and our take on antivirus for small business is where that conversation belongs.
  5. You are counting cents. If $53.88 the first year and $219.48 after that is more than you wanted to spend, Microsoft Defender ($0) covers the device layer and Basic covers the browser layer.

Who should buy which NordVPN plan for threat protection: Complete 4.49 per month for the download scanner, Basic 3.49 per month for DNS blocking only, Prime 7.49 per month for bundled identity monitoring, and keep Microsoft Defender or a paid antivirus if you need malware removal

FAQ

Does NordVPN Threat Protection work without the VPN connected?
Only partly. The desktop scanner, malware-download blocking and app checks run independently of the VPN connection. The DNS-based scam and phishing filtering does not β€” it needs you connected to a server.

Can it replace my antivirus completely?
It can replace a paid antivirus for a careful user who mostly browses and does not handle risky files, especially on Windows 11 where Microsoft Defender already covers full scans and cleanup for free. It cannot replace the device-level scanning, quarantine and remediation a dedicated suite does.

Is Threat Protection free on any NordVPN plan?
The DNS-based layer is included on every plan, including Basic at $3.49/mo. The download scanning, ad blocker and email protection that NordVPN now calls its next-gen antivirus require Complete or Prime.

Does it have independent lab certification?
NordVPN lists AV-Comparatives anti-phishing approval, an AV-Test approval for its anti-malware network, an AV-Comparatives fake-shop detection certificate (80–90% on newly created fake shops according to Nord), and a West Coast Labs validation β€” all awarded to the feature previously called Threat Protection Pro. The page does not list a full antivirus main-test certification.

How many devices can I protect, and is there a refund?
Ten devices at once on a single account on all plans, and a 30-day money-back guarantee on every tier.

Does it slow your computer down?
We did not benchmark it, and we will not pretend to: the scanner examines files as they download rather than running full sweeps of the drive, so the load is occasional instead of constant.

Where does NordProtect fit if I want the identity side too?
NordProtect is Nord’s standalone identity-theft product, and the same monitoring is bundled into Prime. If you only want the monitoring, buy it directly; if you want the scanner plus the monitoring on one invoice, Prime is the cheaper route.

Verdict

Buy NordVPN Complete ($4.49/month on the two-year plan) if you want one app that scans downloads, blocks phishing pages and scams, strips ads and trackers, and includes a VPN β€” that combination is genuinely hard to beat at the price. Buy Basic ($3.49/month) if you already run a real antivirus and only want the browser-layer blocking for free. Buy Prime ($7.49/month) only if you want identity monitoring bundled. Skip the whole family if you don’t want a VPN subscription, or if what you actually need is malware removal on a machine that is already infected β€” check NordVPN’s pricing directly before the offer changes, and pair it with Defender or a dedicated suite.
